Where beauty is more than skin deep... See more than half a million pearls arranged in over 900 precious objects including Audrey Hepburn's glamorous necklace; glistening Paspaley, Chanel and Tiffany pearl creations; royal historical jewellery from Russia, England, France and Germany; and a priceless Roman necklace from 200 CE to name just a few.
Pearls are associated with wealth and are symbolic of purity and dignity. The only gem to come from living creatures, they hold mystical and medicinal powers for many - the ancient Romans saw pearls as the ‘frozen tears of gods'.
From Queen Victoria to Audrey Hepburn, pearls remain a contemporary fashion icon and come in a rainbow of colours and a variety of shapes. Pearls are also found in surprising sizes - don't miss seeing an amazing model of the largest known pearl in the world, an approximately 6.5 kilogram pearl produced by a Giant Clam (Tridacna gigas).
